I just love bobcats. They are definitely one of my favorite wildcats. I hope to own one someday.
The average life expectancy for a bobcat is 7 years. The oldest wild bobcat lived to be 16 years of age. The oldest kept in captivity lived to be 32 years of age.
Bobcats are solitary animals. The only time they interact with each other is during mating season.
They are good climbers as well as swimmers but they tend to avoid the water.
Bobcats can run up to 30 MPH/48 KPH, but they prefer to walk.
They are oftentimes confusing with their cousin, the lynx because of their similarities, but every two things that are similar have differences so let's dive into their differences real quick.
Lynxes live in Europe, Russia, Asia, and North America, whereas bobcats live in North America.
The lynx is bigger than the bobcat. Bobcats weigh 15-30 pounds and lynxes weigh 18-60 pounds.
Bobcats have short ear tufts and the lynxes have very long ear tufts.
The lynx's hind legs are longer than their front, they are also longer than that of a bobcat.
Habitat & Range
Bobcats can be found all throughout North America. Bobcats found in Mexico are referred to as Mexican bobcats.
They make their homes in woodlands, brushlands, mountains, swamps, and desert lands.
Appearance & Size
A bobcat's coat color ranges from brown, beige, tan, and a grayish-brown color. Their beautiful spots act as camouflage.
All have yellow eyes.
They are medium-sized weighing between 15 and 30 pounds.
Hunting & Diet
Bobcat prey on many small mammals and sometimes reptiles like lizards, and snakes. They mainly hunt rabbits but will hunt squirrels, moles, mice, minks, raccoons, skunks, chickens, geese, and fish.
They are crepuscular, meaning they are mainly active during the twilight period.
They are ambush predators.
