You may be thinking about getting a cat but not sure how your dog or the cat would react.
There are several cat breeds that are usually good with dogs if properly introduced. I plan to do a follow-up post about introducing these two animals to each other.
Cats are known to be intimidated by a dog's unlimited energy.
Many cat breeders have dogs in their home/cattery for the sole purpose of getting the cats acquainted with them.
Both animals do best if raised together or introduced as puppies/kittens.
Here's a list of cat breeds that tend to do well with dogs:
1. Bengal
The Bengal made the top of the list because this breed is known to do better with dogs than other cats. This is due to their high energy level that they inherited from their ancestor, the Asian leopard cat.
2. Ragdoll
The Ragdoll is good with cat-friendly dogs. They have been given the name, "Puppy cat" or "dog cat" because of their puppy-like personality.
3. Maine Coon
Maine Coons are also good with dogs. They tend to build a strong bond with their canine friends.
4. Abyssinian
This breed is very curious and sociable. You are likely to find your Abyssinian interacting with the family dog.
5. Japanese Bobtail
The Japanese bobtail usually takes charge and is less likely to be intimidated by a dog or puppy. It is not uncommon for this breed to do well with canines.
6. Birman
The Birman usually gets along well with dogs. Many love to fetch and chase.
7. American Shorthair
The American shorthair is one of the most common cat breeds in the USA. This breed is adaptable and tends to get along well with dogs.
8. Britsh Shorthair
The Britsh Shorthair is good with several different pets such as dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and birds.
9. Ragamuffin
The Ragamuffin is patient and docile, making this breed a good addition to a home with children and dogs.
10. Turkish Angora
The Turkish Angora finds it easy to adapt to households with dogs, and other pets.
11. Siamese
The Siamese is a social breed that desires interaction with dogs and humans alike.
12. Norwegian Forest Cat
The Norwegian Forest cat may be skeptical of the family dog at first, but if introduced properly, with patience, the two should become good friends.
13. The Siberian
If introduced properly, this breed can get along well with dogs.
14. Tonkinese
The Tonkinese is one of the best fetchers in the feline world. This breed does best in a home with another pet, like a dog or another cat as they are very sociable.
15. Munchkin
The Munchkin is a sociable breed that tends to get along with other pets and children.
16. Devon Rex
This breed loves the company of another cat, a dog, or sometimes a bird, or ferret.
17. Turkish Van
This breed makes a good companion for another cat or a dog so long as they respect their position as boss of the household.
18. Sphynx
The Sphynx enjoys the company of a dog or another cat, although tends to choose a human over either of the two.
19. Balinese
This breed has a sweet and loving temperament. They tend to get along well with children and other pets.
20. Havana Brown
The Havana Brown loves the company of their human champions as well as their canine.
Please note that every cat is different, and can act differently from breed standards.
