Cat Breed of The Month--Maine Coon

Why did I choose Maine coons for the month of December? Because this amazing breed sports a beautiful long coat that's perfect for the cold month of December! Another reason is the fact that Maine coons are one of the most popular cat breeds in America.

Maine coons may well be one of my favorites, and I have quite a lot of those!

How did they get their name? They originated in the state of Maine, and the breed looks like a domestic cat mated with a raccoon to produce such a unique breed of cat.

They are one of the largest domestic cat breed, with males weighing around 15-25 pounds. 18 lbs. being about average. Females being a bit smaller, about 8-12 pounds.

They are quite vocal and intelligent. They are also good with kids, dogs, and other cats.

There are actually two types of Maine coons, the European and the American Maine coon. If a Maine coon is "European" or "American," it just means that they were bred in Europe or America.

There are few distinguishable physical characteristics that make the European Maine coon so different than other cat breeds, including the American-bred Maine coon. One being their well-defined, square-shaped muzzle, and another is their more noticeable ear tufts (which is that bit of hair on the tip of their ears). American Maine coons have a more calm and subtle look to them, whereas the European looks more wild and different.

This breed carries the polydactyl gene. Polydactyl is of Greek origin. "Poly" meaning multiple or many. "Dactyl" means fingers, toes, or digits.

Maine coons have been given the nickname "Gentle Giants," because of their size and sweet, friendly personality.

The breed can come in lots of different patterns and colors. They can be solid, tabby, bi-colored, smoke, shaded, and tortoiseshell. As for colors, they can be black, white, blue, red, cream, brown (tabby), and silver.

Maine coons have water resistant fur, so they enjoy playing in the water.

A brown tabby Maine coon named Cosey was first to win the very first cat show in America, which was held in Madison Square Garden in 1895.

A Maine coon named Little Nicky was the first cat to be successfully cloned.

Hope y'all enjoyed reading about this outstanding cat breed, the Maine coon! Merry Christmas!
