Cat Breed of the Month--Bombay

You may have never heard about this awesome cat breed before, and if not, you're in for a treat!

Why did I choose this breed? Because all Bombays are black, and Halloween is coming. Black cats are killed during Halloween and the following weeks, due to superstitious reasons, such as black cats once being associated with witchcraft. Black cats were burned at the stake along with witches in medieval times. Some animal shelters don't adopt out black cats in this period of time. But that's enough of that.

This awesome breed was created by a woman named Nikki Horner, of Louisville, Kentucky, in 1965. Her first attempt to create a cat that resembled a black panther, in 1958, failed, but she tried again, and in 1965, she was successful. A black American shorthair was bred with a Burmese in order to create the Bombay. In 1978, they were recognized as a breed and registered by the Cat Fanciers' Association.

Bombays are a medium-sized cat with a muscular body. They weigh about 10-15 pounds. They tend to be heavier than they look. They have rounded ears, tail, paws, and chin. Their short, sleek, glossy coat sheds less than other cat breeds. Their nose and the soles of their feet are black. Most have copper or gold eyes, while some have green, but this is considered a disqualification when judging Bombays. There is a breed called the British Bombay. They are a cross between a black British shorthair and a Burmese. This breed has green, gold, or yellow eyes. Green eyes on a British Bombay isn't a disqualification, unlike American Bombays. They have a chubbier face than American Bombays. There aren't many differences between the two breeds.

Bombays are playful, attention-seeking, curious cats. They get along well with children, dogs, and other cats, but they are the dominate one, though they tend to depended on their owners. The breed enjoys swimming and baths. Bombays are intelligent and can learn a few simple tricks. Their walk resembles a black panther's graceful walk.

I hope you enjoyed reading about Bombays! Thanks for reading!
